Toothache
is the pain your child will get once it's tooth is beginning to decay. It
is therefore important to ensure your child is brushing his teeth
correctly and as early as possible. Many toothbrushes today are tailored
for the varying stages of the growth of a child.
There is an outer protective coating on the tooth, that is eroded once
decay starts. This decay then bores through the tooth to the nerves. The
point when you will notice pain when eating hot and cold foods.
Symptoms
-
Your child experiences a sharp pain in
the tooth or gum when chewing or breathing in.
-
Your child's tooth hurts when touched.
-
There is a visible cavity or hole in
the tooth.
-
The tooth is visibly broken.
-
The area of gum around the hurting
tooth is broken or swollen.
When to call the doctor
What you can do at home
-
If the tooth is knocked completely but
isn't broken, DO NOT WASH IT. If possible, rinse the dirt off the
tooth with the child's own spit and and put the tooth back in place,
cover the tooth and the ones on each side of it with sugarless chewing
gum to keep it in place. If this is not possible, place the
tooth in either a container of milk or in a wet tissue and go
immediately to the dentist.
-
To relieve pain of toothache, wet a
cloth with warm water, wring it out well, and place it over the side
of your child's face.
-
If your child is still uncomfortable,
an over the counter pain medicine (an example is aspirin but you
should always check for allergies) can help to relieve the pain, but
you must always strictly adhere to the directions on the packaging.
Regular visits to the dentist , usually
twice per year , will help reduce any likelihood of decay.
